Match Preview : Wilhelmus Rijsbergen is aiming for his first victory as Indonesia national team coach when Merah Putih hosts Turkmenistan in the second leg of their 2014 World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Ashgabat last week, a goalless draw will be enough for Indonesia to qualify for the group stage third round of Asian qualifying, but the Dutch coach is confident his squad can get a win.
The pitch at Ashgabat Olympic Stadium was pockmarked with bald patches and grass of uneven length, making it difficult for Indonesia to play its signature short passing game.
Jakarta’s Bung Karno Stadium, which hosted the 2007 Asian Cup final, has a better surface and Rijsbergen said the team would go back to its usual playing style.
Meanwhile, Turkmenistan coach Yazguly Hojageldiyev said he was confident the quality of the pitch at Bung Karno Stadium would play to his side’s advantage. The grass is “very different from what we have, and we’ll play better,” he said.
“I don’t worry about the home fans. The more the better. We’ll be aggressive and try to score another early goal.”
Turkmenistan will be missing two of its starting midfielders. Artur Gevorkyan is suspended because of the red card he picked up in the first leg. Also missing will be Vyacheslav Krendelev, who scored the team’s goal in Ashgabat but had to return to his club in Russia.
